Channel 5 have now officially confirmed that season 13 of American Idol will premiere in the UK at 5:00pm on Saturday the 1st of February, 2014, on 5*. The new series kicks off with a 2 hour-long episode.

Though a little later than many British viewers had hoped for, this TV schedule time slot at least sets up a potential talent show marathon for UK viewers. Combined with The Voice on BBC One, which usually airs around 7:00pm, fans of these shows will be in for something of a treat on Saturday evenings.

This years competition features the fresh judging lineup of Harry Connick Jr, Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez, with Ryan Seacrest back once again to host proceedings.

Totally gutted re. American Idol. Have been glued since the first series. Knocks our ‘talent’ shows into a cocked hat.
    Have also emailed 5*.
Complain, complain, complain. Let’s hope they listen.

I wrote to Channel 5 to complain and have received the following reply:
    ‘Dear Correspondent

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding American Idol.

Unfortunately, Series 13 of this programme was not performing as well as we had hoped in the timeslots it had been allocated and has been temporarily removed from 5*. We can assure you that we do understand how frustrating it is for viewers who were watching the programme but it is simply not feasible for us to continue scheduling a programme which isn’t attracting enough viewers.

As a commercial television channel, competing against some extremely aggressive opposition, we try to make each programme available to the widest potential audience but sometimes this means having to reschedule a programme in a different timeslot or remove it temporarily and resume transmitting it at another time in order to protect it. Scheduling is one of the hardest tasks faced by broadcasters and essentially it is impossible to please all of our viewers at any one time.

We are planning to resume broadcasting the series in June but no dates or times have been confirmed at the moment. Please keep an eye on the television listings magazines or TV Guide on our website for updates

Nonetheless, we appreciate that you are frustrated with this scheduling decision and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to let us know how you feel. The details of your complaint have been noted for the attention of all relevant personnel.

Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

    Yours sincerely

Exactly the same comment word for word yet didn’t answer when I asked how I was to be reimbursed for wasting my time only for it to be cut so this tells me that this is the same message sent to anyone who complains regardless of what you say

I know I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t on, I thought it had just been taken off for one night! OMG I am so disappointed that they have taken this show off, I loved it. Just moved back home after being in Canada and I watched it every week there.

HOPE CHANNEL 5 ARE READING THESE COMMENTS AND REALISE THAT THEY ARE LOSING A HUGE NUMBER OF VIEWERS. I HAVE WATCHED IDOL FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AND AM DELIGHTED THAT COWELL IS NO LONGER A PANELIST. WHEN I USED TO LISTEN TO HIM DESTROYING THE CONTESTANTS I WAS ASHAMED TO BE BRITISH.THIS YEAR’S IDOL IS ONE OF THE BEST. YOU SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE AIR CHANNEL 5.

I totally agree with everyone else and I will never watch another thing on 5*. I love American Idol and the fact that they just gave us a taster of it is appalling. I thought my Tivo box had just not recorded it in error until I searched everywhere for it and realised it had been taken off. Most upsetting.

If 5* weren’t going to air the whole series why on earth take it from ITV!! I didn’t even know it was on until I came across it – also what a time to air it, why not in the evenings when viewers are ready to sit down and watch TV. At the time they aired it I was busy getting supper and supervising children. Am so disappointed and I hope they do air it in the summer – or is that a promise they hope we will forget about.

    5* SHAME ON YOU!
How disappointing to watch half a series then all of a sudden nothing! They could have least have aired the show to the end of the series. Instead of leaving loyal viewers in suspense with a cliff hanger show.
Everyone may ask what have 5* deemed to be a better replacement to boost ratings then? I can tell you low budget movies from 10 -20 years ago! Fight back ITV2. Your viewers will return.

This is just appalling!! How disrespectful to viewers can this channel get?? I for sure will not be tuning in to 5* ever again, their actions are 1* at best. I am actually right now trying to untune this channel from my Tivo! Disgusting.

I agree with everyone, it’s a disgrace how 5* have aired American Idol, if it wasn’t for on demand, I wouldn’t have had a clue it was on. Totally gutted to find they have cancelled it at this stage. You tube it is. Let’s hope ITV get the rights back next season.

This is just like when a wealthy team buys a top footballer so that other teams can’t have him, and then leaves him on the bench.
Why bid for this excellent programme in the first place, Channel Five, if you weren’t going to advertise it or give it a decent time slot?
Don’t blame the viewing figures when you hardly even mentioned that Idol was on! Any failure is your responsibility, Channel Five.

Disgraceful Channel 5, will never watch another series on it. Have enjoyed Idol on ITV2 for over 10 years and LOVE IT, Channel 5 totally crap!
