Introduction and Plot

Actors John Simm and David Threlfall head the cast of ITV’s brand new 2015 crime drama, Code of a Killer.

Set in the 1980’s, this two-part series is based on the real-life story of Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, the revolutionary British geneticist who transformed police forensic investigations when he developed the techniques of DNA fingerprinting. In one of the biggest contributions ever made to the world of criminal investigation, this science is now used by police forces all around the world.

Code of a Killer will recreate this amazing discovery and show how, in the hands of Detective Chief Superintendent David Baker, it was first used to catch a double murderer.

David Threlfall will be playing the part of DCS David Baker, who during the mid-eighties, led the investigation into the brutal murders of two Leicestershire schoolgirls.

Meanwhile, John Simm takes on the role of Dr Alec Jeffreys as he, just a short distance away at Leicester University, was busy working on a technique capable of reading anyone’s unique DNA fingerprint.

Filming Locations – Where was Code of a Killer filmed for ITV?

Starting in late-September of 2014, filming for Code of a Killer took place over seven weeks at locations in the cities of London and Leicester. According to the Leicester Mercury, some scenes were filmed inside the University of Leicester’s Adrian Building, with cast shooting in the very same laboratory Sir Alec Jeffreys used to make his game-changing discovery all those years ago. The Professor himself was on set to help out with the shows production, so expect to see a historically and scientifically accurate account of just how his discovery was made.
