So is Dancing in Ice going to return for a new series in 2014? The good news is yes the skating show will be back next year for a new series, the bad news however is it’ll be its last.
Coaches and stars of the show Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, announced earlier this year that 2014 would become the ninth and final series. Speaking to ITV, the skating stars said Dancing on Ice had “reached its natural end.”
Also as series nine will coincide will the 30th anniversary of the pairs Olympic gold medal winning performance of the Bolero, “it seemed a fitting time to say goodbye.”
Along with Torvill and Dean’s decision to step down, difficulty in recruiting big name celebrity cast members due to the inherent injury risks in ice skating, may also have proved a key factor in ITV cancelling the show. That’s not to mention the sheer levels of skill and fitness required to be a contestant.
Let’s face it, from a minor celebs point of view, which would you rather take on in order to increase your profile and earn a few bucks. Blades of steel on slippery ice, or the rather tamer world of ballroom dancing? Plus once you’ve appeared on DOI, your far less likely to get the call from Strictly.
On a more positive note though, ITV intend to finish on a high be making this one of the best series ever. So let’s make the most of what is a highly popular TV show, before it’s gone.
