Cast of Dark Angel: ITV Drama to star actress Joanne Froggatt as Victorian serial killer Mary Ann Cotton, with filming due to start this August.

Plot

Dark Angel is an upcoming two-part ITV drama based on the disturbing true story of 19th century poisoner Mary Ann Cotton. Though destined to commit multiple murders, the series first introduces viewers to a very different Mary Ann, showing her as a caring mother and loving wife.

After living in Plymouth for a number of years, she and her family have recently returned home to their native County Durham. But with a husband quickly becoming too ill to work and the group facing extreme poverty, Cotton now shows how far she’s willing to go to secure herself a better life.

The first cast member announced for the series is Joanne Froggatt, who’ll play lead character Mary Ann Cotton. Froggatt is currently best known for playing Anna Bates in fellow ITV drama Downton Abbey. The 34-year-old actress also played Kate in the Robin Hood BBC TV series, along with Angelique Mahy in ITV’s Island at War.
