We’ve known for a few weeks now that the Doctor Who 2014 series will premiere in the UK sometime in August, but the BBC has now officially set the exact start date for Saturday, 23 August, 2014.

Airing on BBC One, the new series will kick-off with a feature-length first episode, entitled ‘Deep Breath’. Viewers will finally see Peter Capaldi take on the iconic role, becoming the Twelfth Doctor. Capaldi will be joined on screen by companion Clara, who’ll again be played by Jenna Coleman.

This specially extended season premiere may explain why series 8 is now scheduled to broadcast over 12 episodes, as opposed to the initially expected 13.

Here’s a look at the latest series 8 teaser-trailer, which gives fans a first-look glimpse of the new Doctor and Clara:

The new 2014 series of Doctor Who will also see Clara and the Doctor joined by male companion Danny Pink, who’ll be played by English actor Samuel Anderson.

Set to make special guest appearances during the eighth season are Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty), Hermione Norris (The Crimson Field), Ben Miller (Death in Paradise), Tom Riley (Monroe) and comedian/TV presenter Frank Skinner.
