‘Secrets of South America’ with Billie JD Porter – Miss Venezuela Casting

In a preview of Secrets of South America episode 1, the BBC takes a look behind the scenes of the Miss Venezuela beauty pageant casting rounds.

To say the contest judges have high standards is clearly an understatement as ‘King’ Osmel Sousa seemingly picks out flaws that don’t even exist. In a contest designed to realise the judges’ image of perfection, it appears natural beauty is routinely forsaken in favour of plastic surgery modifications.

Secrets of South America is a three-part BBC Three documentary series fronted by broadcaster and journalist Billie JD Porter. First aired in 2014, the programme set out to uncover the lives, politics and youth culture shaping modern South America, moving beyond the stereotypical images of carnival and football.

In Brazil, Porter explored the stark divide between Rio’s glamorous beaches and its sprawling favelas, meeting young people caught between opportunity and inequality. The Peru episode revealed a generation wrestling with tradition and modernity, while in Venezuela, she witnessed the realities of life under Hugo Chávez’s socialist legacy, capturing both optimism and discontent on the streets of Caracas.

Known for her immersive and candid reporting style, Porter placed herself at the heart of the story, often challenging her own assumptions. Secrets of South America stood out as a bold, youth-focused documentary that highlighted the complexities of a continent in transition, and helped cement Porter’s reputation as a fearless on-screen journalist.

In episode 1 of this new three-part BBC Three documentary series, Billie JD Porter takes an in-depth look into the highly competitive world of the Miss Venezuela beauty contest. Over the course of her six-month stay, Billie exposes just what the show’s contestants go through in their quests for fame and fortune.

Using anything from extreme dieting to plastic surgery, these so-called beauty boot camps are designed to transform the wannabes into what this South American country sees as female physical perfection.
