As part of the BBC’s selection of programming marking the centenary of The Great War, new period drama The Crimson Field brings viewers one of the conflict’s untold stories.
Set in a tented field hospital on the coast of France, a group of British doctors, nurses and female volunteers work to save the many soldiers wounded during the horrific trench warfare. We also find the makeshift medical centre not only acts as a boundary between the home front and the battlefield, but also between old rules and a new way of thinking.

The BBC has just released the above trailer for this brand new drama series, which starts in Spring 2014 on BBC One. The exact premiere date and time for The Crimson Field has now been officially announced as Sunday, 6 April at 9:00pm.
Where was The Crimson Field filmed for the BBC? – TV Filming Locations
Although this new BBC period drama is set on the French coast during World War One, the main filming locations used were actually the fields of Wiltshire, England.

According to production designer Cristina Casali, this large-scale set, which was built from scratch especially for the show, is based on a real-life hospital that was located in a fishing town in northern France.

Update – Season 2?
The BBC drama The Crimson Field ultimately did not return for a second series. Despite a strong cast and a warm reception from viewers when it aired in spring 2014, the broadcaster confirmed just a few months later that the show would not be renewed.
The cancellation was announced in September 2014, with the BBC stating that while it was proud of the drama, it would not be commissioning further episodes. The decision disappointed fans who had hoped to see writer Sarah Phelps’ long-term storylines develop, as she had originally planned the series to run for several years. Ultimately, the six-episode run remains the show’s only outing.
